Advanced Program

Open to students :
  • Violin Book 6+ or Level 6+ RCM
  • Viola and Cello Book 5+ or Level 5+ RCM

An  individualized program with each student will be developed that meets the goals of student/teacher/parent with study of significant repertoire from the Suzuki Method books and preparation for Royal Conservatory exam levels. Other performance styles (fiddling, jazz, improvisation, etc) could be explored

The student will have a one hour minimum individual lesson on their instrument with additional time for theory, history and second instrument study. Theory study of up to Level 8 will be required. Supplementary etudes, repertoire and orchestral excerpts along with technique will be part of lessons. Completion of Level 7 and 8 practical and theory can be used towards high school credits. Advanced RCM levels require completion of Level 9, 10, and ARCT history which is taught at the Thornhill School of Suzuki String Teaching. Additional required Harmony and Analysis courses will be studied outside of the program.  See also THEORY, HISTORY and PIANO Lessons

Group activities include advanced repertoire group, which may include like and cross instrument ensemble work, scheduled once to twice per month. Skills study may be included. Masterclasses with one of our professional pianists will be regularly scheduled. Extra fees will be assessed to cover the masterclasses.

Students could be involved in volunteer and paying performances in the community with and without the  Core Suzuki students. Community performances can meet high school community service hours. Participation in Thornhill Suzuki solo festival and/or other festivals throughout the year are possibilities as well as participation in other joint Suzuki program concerts such as Thanks to Dr. Suzuki concert.

Opportunities to mentor less advanced Core Suzuki students may be available to interested Advanced Program students.
